So You Want to Review Free and Discounted Products for Amazon...

Several people have asked me how I got into product reviewing.  There isn't a short answer. Only a few of those people that I've explained the process to have actually decided to devote the energy and time to the endeavor.  I will warn you now.  It is time consuming, sometimes frustrating, and requires a fair amount of work.  But I love it!!!!  And once you get started, you will too!

So...how do you begin?  A few things you should know up front.
  • Amazon Prime is a must if you are going to be doing this on a regular basis.  Otherwise, you will end up paying for shipping, which can get expensive.  Amazon Prime offers you free 2 day shipping, over 40,000 movies and television episodes to watch, nnlimited, ad-free access to over a million songs and hundreds of playlists, unlimited photo storage in Amazon Cloud Drive, and more.  If you're not sure you want to spend the $99 for a year's subscription, you can try the service free for 30 days.  Sign up at Amazon Prime  to get your free 30 day trial. Remember to cancel this before you 30 days are up if you do not plan on purchasing the subscription.  A couple of tips....if you are a student and sign up with an .edu email address you can get Prime for $49 per year.  If you have more than one member in your household that uses Amazon, you can share your shipping benefits with up to four members of your household.
  • If you are going to do this, you really should have a few reviews completed before attempting to get products for review.  I recommend that you go into your orders and write product reviews on at least 5 - 10 of your purchases.  These can be books, digital downloads, or products that you have ordered.  Try to be thorough when writing a review and make sure it is relevant to the product.  Describe your experience with the product.  What you liked, and what you disliked.  Once you have completed this, you are ready to join a product review site or two.  I would recommend that you start small.  Join one or two, and get your feet wet.  Once you are comfortable, you can dive in head first.
  • Products usually range from free to $1-$2 per product.  Sometimes they are more expensive, but if you don't want to pay that much, you just don't opt in.  And I try not to get products that I know I will not use, or that I know a family member will not use.  I don't want to take away an opportunity from someone that really will use the product.
  • A couple of other ground rules.  When receiving these products, it is against all terms of service to share promotional codes sent to you.  It is forbidden to resell any of the products you receive.  You can, however, give them to people, or donate them.
  • Okay....so what next?  Below are links to several sites where you can sign up for email blasts, meaning they send you an email when they release a product to be reviewed, or sites where you can request to review a product on the website.  Some of these will send immediate notification of promo codes, and other will require the seller to choose to send it to you.  You will not get every product you try for.
This can be a very enjoyable experience that allows you to receive products you may not normally purchase, or can't afford to purchase.  The longer you do it, the better your reviews, and the higher your Amazon Reviewer Rank, the better items you will receive.  It takes time to build up your profile, but I personally think it is really worth it.
